Charms and Valentine’s Day go hand in hand. Whether you’re talking about a traditional silver charm bracelet or Italian Charm tiles, these can be custom-made into a perfect and personal message for your Valentine’s Day gift.

But there are other kinds of charms too, ones that bring to mind magical spells and witchcraft (the good kind!) that has been part of human culture since the very beginning.  Here are a few suggestions about charms that you may not have thought about…

Giving a gift to someone without expecting anything in return is considered a “charmed art.” For love charms, what you give is what you’ll receive, or to put it another way: what goes around, comes around. Give unconditionally, and you will be rewarded many times over.

Receiving a gift is also a charmed art. Don’t feel like you’re worthy, so getting a gift is always awkward?? Relax! The other person obviously sees something in you that is worthwhile, so treasure the gift and go with the flow. It’s part of that two-way giving-receiving thing that completes a circle.

The ancients from every society had all kinds of love charms, potions, and rituals that have been handed down through time and are still with us today. Here are a few of them:

  • Reading tea leaves after the ritual of tea-drinking. Offering a cup of tea is a fairly common thing, and once drunk the tea leaves could be “read” by someone skilled in this art to divine the love prospects of the tea drinker.
  • Hazlenuts (from the tree of knowlege, and often called the food of the gods) can tell you a story about your romantic prospects. Throw them on the fire and see if they land next to each other, or separated. Is there a love match here, or should you keep looking?
  • Counting the seeds in an apple can guide you in evaluating your relationship. An even number of seeds suggests a happy relationship, while an odd number indicates the woman should stay single for the time being. A warning is in seeds that are cut in half, as that relationship could be a stormy one – perhaps due to the infidelity of your lover. If there’s more than one cut seed, forget it – get AWAY from that relationship!
  • Exchanging rings is a very well known love charm that dates back to ancient times when a woman would transfer her lands to her new husband.
  • A lock of hair is the ultimate love charm! Make it into a circle for a more potent charm, and keep it in a special place like a wooden box or a locket.
  • Flowers are perhaps the most common form of love charm token, with red roses signifying an extra special love. Many women secretly hope to get that dozen of red roses delivered to her on Valentine’s Day!
  • Dove feathers, used as a love charm, signals rebirth and dove feathers have been used in love charms by the gypsy people. In the Yin and Yang, dove feathers are feminine and are combined with the masculine snake charm into a powerful charm signalling a new start and a new life. These components might be a little hard to obtain but perhaps a visit to the local zoo or pet shop (or even magic shop!) might have them.
  • Swans mate for life, and are a powerful love charm. If you’re the type who likes being protected and nurtured, you might want to have this charm handy because the male swan is very protective of the female.
  • Diamonds are more than just a girl’s best friend… they are the hardest substance known on earth, revered in Tibet associated with virgin goddesses. Many people however don’t care for diamonds, finding them to empty, clear and generally too hard and harsh for a love charm.
  • Rose quartz is a a warm, inviting love charm that heals love’s hurts at the same time. Rose quartz is truly a magical love charm.
  • The Seasons offer the opportunities for strong love charms. Spring is the season where everyone just can’t help to be happy and have a little spring in their step. After the long winter lovers begin coming out looking for a mate and it is the most popular time of year to get married in. Fall or Autumn is filled with warm colors all around, and great temperatures for you to truly enjoy your lover. As for Winter, if you’ve used your love charms wisely and acquired a mate, you two can have a spectacular hibernation!
